Annette Marie Hamall Freeman

Annette Marie Hamall

The Third Daughter

Third daughter of Thomas Kenny Hamall and Barbara Ann O'Brien, born September 2, 1960, in Omaha, Nebraska. When Annette was very young, the family moved from Nebraska to New Jersey and then to Ohio and Georgia — the restless early years of a growing family finding its footing.

Annette was the middle sister in the first wave of Hamall girls — sandwiched between Mary Katherine and Eileen on one side, Rosemary and Claire on the other. The early photos tell the story: three little girls in matching blue dresses, a baby in Grandma Hamall's lap at Christmas, a family portrait with Thomas and Barbara surrounded by their children. Annette is in all of them, smiling.

The earliest photographs show three little girls in matching blue dresses — Mary, Annette, and Eileen, close enough in age to be dressed alike, posed together on the couch, always together. Annette was the one in the middle. There's a Christmas photo, too: Grandma Hamall in her red cardigan and pearls, reading a counting book to the girls by the tree. These are the images that matter — the ones that show Annette as she was at the beginning, surrounded by sisters, held by the people who loved her.
