Michael Joseph O'Brien Jr. was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, the eldest child of Lt. Colonel Michael Joseph O'Brien and Jacqueline Petras O'Brien. The family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia in 1986, where Mike became a senior at Warner Robins High School.

A gifted athlete, Mike played soccer for the Houston County Parks and Recreation team and the Macon Adult Soccer League. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sky Roman Catholic Church at Robins Air Force Base.

Mike died on March 18, 1989 in a motorcycle accident. He was eighteen years old.
